Single Visit Restorative Dentistry at Soft Touch

Aside from offering dentistry services for patients of all ages, our experienced and compassionate team specializes in helping patients feel relaxed and comfortable from the moment they step foot into our office, and part of that means getting patients taken care of as quickly and efficiently as possible. Some of the sate-of-the-art technology we use that allows us to do that ranges from Galileo’s 3D imaging to intra-oral cameras, and most recently, our single visit restorative dentistry with Sirona CEREC. This technology allows us to offer single-day crowns, inlays, and onlays.

What are crowns? A crown is a type of cosmetic dentistry procedure where a tooth or implant is covered by tooth-shaped material. Its purpose is to restore function to a damaged tooth, as well as improve appearance. You may need a crown if you are experiencing any of the following:

Inlays and onlays are types of restorative and cosmetic dentistry used to repair rear teeth with mild to moderate decay or cracked and fractured teeth that are not sufficiently damaged to need a crown but too damaged to require just a filling.

With single visit restorative dentistry services for cosmetic dentistry, patients can now undergo restorative and cosmetic dentistry, including crowns, inlays, and onlays in one day rather than in two visits, which used to be the industry standard. This fast, more comfortable treatment can be done with no impression tray, no temporary crown, and only one anesthetic injection. CEREC stands for CEramic REConstruction, which is a process where the patient’s mouth is digitally scanned and a replacement is designed and placed in the same appointment.

Single visit restorative dentistry offers the following benefits for patients looking for cosmetic dentistry:

Single visit cosmetic dentistry saves time by completing the procedure in one visit rather than two, which is how long traditional crowns typically take to complete. While in-chair time doesn’t differ dramatically from one method to the other, it saves patients from having to make multiple appointments, along with time driving to and from the office, and taking time off from work.

Another benefit of Single Visit Crowns is that the CEREC system allows the crown to be designed, milled, and placed in the same office, by the same dentist, on the same day. By creating the crown in our office, we can ensure a perfect fit for our patients and guarantee high quality materials that will last.

How CEREC Works

CEREC employs one of the most advanced technologies available in dentistry in order to build a virtual model of your mouth. CEREC uses a precision wand that is used to scan your mouth at the part where the dental restoration will occur; as it scans, you will be able to see the scan at work, as it builds the digital model of your mouth right on screen. This scan is achieved thanks to the CEREC Omnicam, a camera that takes precise 3D images, a far leap in technology from those uncomfortable conventional molding trays. With this model as a starting point, we can then make slight adjustments to the model to ensure the model matches your mouth exactly.

Once this process has been completed and we have a model of the restoration area, we will work to create the design for the restoration, which will be fitted to the exact specifics of the area where it will be placed.

The process then moves on to a milling machine, where there is a color-matched block of porcelain milled into place along the final restoration piece. Unlike other processes, where this may be only a temporary restoration fitting, with CEREC, this is no different than a restoration that would be seen from an offsite dental lab. The CEREC milling software is extremely precise, which results in smooth contours and edges.

After a quick test fit and any final modifications that may need to occur, we will bond your restoration to your tooth. The process allows us to use zirconia for the full contour restorations, but it also gives the freedom to choose all other glass ceramics, and thanks to CEREC’s SpeedFire furnace, we offer the shortest sintering and firing times that can take place right in the dentist chair. Before you know it, you will be able to walk out of our office with your finished restoration in just one visit.
